The Polysleep Mattress

Unpacking the Polysleep mattress

The Polysleep mattress arrives in a minimalist looking box, made from compostable recycled cardboard to reduce the carbon footprint.
This box weighs between 33 lb (Twin) and 89 lb (King), so it's preferable for two people to carry it.

It opens from the top, revealing the rolled mattress, vacuum-packed.

We don't provide additional tools such as a cutter in order to avoid as much plastic waste as possible. But don't worry, a simple pair of scissors will do the trick to unpack your mattress!

    The Douglas Mattress

    Unpacking the Douglas mattress

The Douglas mattress is delivered in a cardboard box printed in the brand's colors and signed Douglas.

This box weighs between 50 lb (Full) and 80 lb (King), it's also advisable for two people to carry it.

      Opening & Polysleep Foam Layers

The Polysleep mattress is made of 4 layers of foam for a total thickness of 10 inches. It is also surrounded by a foam support frame, unique in the industry, which reinforces the edges of the mattress to offer better support there at all times. As a result, the Polysleep mattress offers a very balanced sleeping surface.

      Here is its detailed composition:

      • Cover - 4% Polyviscose, 58% Polyester, 1% Spandex. Waterproof, soft and superior quality mesh.
      • First layer - Polysleep's viscoelastic antimicrobial ventilated hybrid foam - Density of 3.0 lb/cu.ft (ISO 20743 certified).
      • Second layer - Transitional polyurethane foam - Density of 1.8 lb/cu.ft
      • Third layer - Supporting polyurethane foam - Density of 1.8 lb/cu.ft
      • Contour layer - Patented polyurethane foam support frame - Density of 2.0 lb/cu.ft

The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means that they are produced without chemical components that are harmful to the ozone layer. They're also regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. None of the foams used in Polysleep products contain latex.

      Let's compare the firmness

The firmness of a mattress boils down to the initial feeling when you lie on it. It's important to note that firmness is not the same thing as support. The latter ensures the proper alignment of your spine.

      6.5

With a firmness rating of 6.5/10, the Polysleep mattress is considered "medium firm", which is optimal for people who sleep on their back, stomach and especially on their side

The Polysleep mattress is composed of a very reactive hybrid foam that quickly reverts to its original shape. So it ensures better support while giving you the sensation of floating on a small cloud.

        6

The Douglas mattress has a firmness of 6/10. This mattress is significantly less firm than the Polysleep Mattress, but firmer for example than the Endy Mattress according to our Polysleep vs Endy test

It's recommended if you sleep on your back or on your side.

Its construction makes it less comfortable for tummy sleepers.

Let's compare the reactivity of each mattress

For a mattress, rebound is the measure of its reaction when pressure is applied.

          The Polysleep Mattress

          Polysleep Foam Testing

This test demonstrates in real time the reactivity or "rebound" of the Polysleep mattress' foam.

The surface of the latter is denser which results in minimal rebound time.

            The Douglas Mattress

            Douglas Foam Testing

According to the test, the foam of the Douglas mattress is not really reactive

Being less firm, the foam takes longer to return to its original shape.

Protection against liquids: the waterproof test!

A water-repellent cover added to your mattress increases its lifespan. It protects it against perspiration, night mishaps or any other stain from liquids.

However, finding a mattress with a waterproof cover that allows air to circulate is not always easy!

We have tested for you the covers of both mattresses: Polysleep vs Douglas against water!

              The Polysleep Mattress

              Polysleep liquid repellency test

We poured about 2 cups of water on the surface of the mattress. The test shows that the water was instantly repelled from the surface of the cover and most of it trickled down to the floor.

Note that in case of stains caused by a liquid other than water (ex: coffee), the cover is removable and can be washed.

                The Douglas Mattress

                Douglas liquid repellency test

The cover of the Douglas mattress is not waterproof. According to the video, we can see that it immediately soaks up the liquid poured on its surface. Since the cover is removable, Douglas recommends cleaning it with cold or warm water on a delicate setting if you wish to machine wash it. However, it is possible to purchase the Douglas mattress protector, designed to resist liquids, as an additional option. Note, however, that the addition of a mattress protector could reduce air circulation within your mattress.

Let's compare the support on the edges of each mattress

Have you ever lost your balance at the edge of your mattress? Perhaps you've even fallen out of bed?

This feeling of instability and lack of support can occur when you sleep close to the edge of a mattress without reinforced contours.

                  The Polysleep Mattress

Support on the edges of the Polysleep mattress

The Polysleep mattress features an integrated support frame that surrounds the entire mattress

This characteristic specific to the Polysleep mattress allows support on both sides of the mattress ends, while promoting a harmonious sleeping area.

We can observe that the edges of the Polysleep mattress sag only slightly when you are on the edge.

                    The Douglas Mattress

Support on the edges of the Douglas mattress

According to the video, the edges of the Douglas mattress tend to sag when sitting on the ends of the mattress. This could cause discomfort, especially if you sleep on your side.

This is an important point to consider when making your purchase: the lack of support could hinder sleepers who tend to move closer to the edge of their mattress during sleep, as well as sleepers who use their hands to get in and out of bed.

                      Motion Transfer Test

What is motion transfer on a mattress? It's the way the mattress isolates and absorbs movement. This is an important factor for people sleeping as a couple who don't want to be disturbed by their partner if they move or get up during the night (also to be considered if you sleep with a pet!).

                      The Polysleep Mattress

                      Polysleep Motion Transfer

The tests performed in the video show a very good resistance of the Polysleep mattress to motion transfer. The extremities as well as the more central areas of the mattress passed all the tests!
This guarantees that you will not be disturbed by any movement of your partner or pet during the night!

You can consult other tests performed by sleep experts by clicking below:

                        The Douglas Mattress

                        Douglas Motion Transfer

The Douglas mattress also has good insulation from movement, as our tests show!

So, if you or your bed partner tend to spend restless nights, it shouldn't be too much of a nuisance for either of you.

Support on the edges of the mattress: Weight throw test

                          The Polysleep Mattress

Weight test on the Polysleep mattress

A 50 pound kettlebell was dropped at the ends of the mattress to perform this weight test. We can see that the Polysleep mattress perfectly absorbs the pressure of the weight. It does not fall off the mattress despite the impact.

So, Polysleep shows better support on the edges of the mattress and better balance of your sleeping surface.

                            The Douglas Mattress

Weight test on the Douglas mattress

The same 50 pound kettlebell was dropped on the edges of the Douglas mattress.
As for the Polysleep mattress, the pressure of the weight was easily assimilated and it remains quite stable on the mattress.

                              Conclusion

In order to compare the Douglas and Polysleep mattresses, we subjected each mattress to tests carried out under strictly identical conditions. You can watch each test on video!

We all have different needs in terms of sleep. So, it's essential to compare and identify the characteristics that are most important to you in order to choose the mattress that suits you.

Also, here is a brief summary of the major differences observed between the Douglas mattress and the Polysleep mattress:

                              Douglas:

                              • Foam: Tests on the Douglas mattress have shown a certain lack of reactivity of the foam, which takes longer to revert to its initial shape when pressure is applied.
                              •

                              • Mattress cover: Unlike the Polysleep mattress cover, the Douglas mattress cover does not benefit from water-repellent treatment. Although it can be removed for cleaning, it is not waterproof and the mattress is more likely to be damaged in the medium term. In addition, Douglas does not guarantee a refund if the mattress is stained or damaged due to nighttime mishaps.
                              •

                              • Support on mattress edges: The ends of the Douglas mattress tend to sag, which is not optimal for people who sleep more on the edges of their mattress, or who lean on the edges to get out of bed.
                              •

                              • Firmness: The Douglas mattress is significantly less firm than the Polysleep Mattress. It's more suitable if you sleep on your back or on your side.
                              •

                              • Financing option: Douglas offers a 0% financing option if you pay for the mattress within 6 months. However, this offer is not valid on discounted products.

                              Polysleep:

                              • Foam: Following our tests, we noticed that the foam used in the Polysleep mattress has a better rebound and comes back in place more quickly than the one used in the Douglas mattress. The hybrid foam used by Polysleep is recognized for its superior quality and will allow your mattress to withstand the test of time.
                              •

                              • In addition, the Polysleep foam stands out by its antimicrobial treatment certified ISO 20743:2013. You benefit from a healthier sleeping surface, far from the germs that accumulate each year in your mattress.
                              •

                              • Mattress cover: The Polysleep mattress cover offers liquid protection thanks to a water-repellent treatment that does not detract from the mattress's breathability. So you can enjoy long breakfasts in bed with peace of mind!
                              •

                              • Support on mattres edges: The Polysleep mattress has an integrated support frame to offer more comfort and support at the edges. In addition, the high density foam base layer acts like a box spring and provides additional reinforcement.
                              •

                              • Firmness: The Polysleep mattress offers a firmness rating of 6.5/10, corresponding to a moderately firm surface. The mattress will meet the needs of people who appreciate the feeling of "softness" but who are also looking for a fairly firm sleeping surface.
                              •

                              • Financing option: Polysleep offers a 0% financing option valid at all times, also during sales periods.
                              •

A Polysleep Queen size mattress retails for $1050, while the Douglas mattress will cost you $749. However, Polysleep offers better value for money with more features integrated in its mattress: integrated support frame, liquid resistant cover, antimicrobial foam...
