Creative Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day (Beyond Brunch!)

Double Chevron Left Back to Sleep & Wellness

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and I often find it challenging to come up with ways to make the day special for the mothers in my life. What is meaningful for one person may not be suitable for another. While we should appreciate our mothers every day, here are some unique ways to make Mother’s Day even more special.

1. Karaoke

Who doesn’t enjoy singing along to songs in the shower, while doing chores, or when we're in a good mood? It’s not only fun, it also relieves stress. You can enjoy this activity with your mom and loved ones. Consider going to a karaoke night at a local bar, restaurant, or pub where you can sing all your mom's favorite oldies to her heart's content.

If large crowds aren't your mom's preference, there are plenty of karaoke rooms available in cities, as they have become quite popular. You can rent a room for the number of hours you need and for the number of people you want to invite, which will determine the total cost of your karaoke time. They often offer snacks and beverages as well. Most of these are Korean and feature a wide range of songs in various genres. Some places also allow you to use YouTube, which is a convenient option.

You can set up karaoke at home if you're on a budget or just don't feel like going out. To enhance the experience, consider getting microphones and using karaoke apps or YouTube. Even without microphones, the experience can still be a lot of fun, speaking from personal experience.

2. Dance lesson(s)

Dance lessons are a great gift for a mother who can't sit still when music is playing. You can choose any style of dance she has always wanted to learn or improve upon. Many dance schools offer packages, such as 10 lessons in a specific dance style. If you're uncertain about the commitment, consider starting with a single class to see if it suits your mother. Some classes also provide free trials. Joining her for the lessons is a wonderful way to spend time and bond with her.

3. Gym/physical activities

One wonderful way to spend time with your mom is by going to the gym together to participate in activities like yoga, Pilates, or any other physical exercise, especially if she enjoys being active. You can both make a commitment to becoming healthier together. Similar to dance lessons, many gyms offer packages or annual memberships. Maintaining good mobility and strength is crucial for reducing the risk of injury as we age. Encourage your mother by reminding her that she can be independent and perform daily activities with ease as she ages.

If your mom has been interested in getting more active, consider gifting her essentials to do it at home, such as a mat, kettlebells, dumbbells, yoga blocks, and elastic bands. You can learn online how to set up a workout for her or hire a personal trainer to assist her.

Here is a video explaining the benefits of strength training and why it’s important for individuals aged 55 and above.

4. Spa (of course)

We definitely cannot forget about the spa. Many of us have probably considered this or even taken our moms there. Visiting the spa is always a great idea and beneficial for everyone. You can also add a massage or any skincare service that she would enjoy.

If the spa is too expensive, consider creating a spa-like environment at home and planning various body care treatments. Set the mood by playing calming playlists and having a lovely eucalyptus-scented candle or humidifier nearby.

5. Restaurant experience

Moms are famous for their delicious meals, and no one cooks quite like your mom. Even if she doesn’t cook, anyone would appreciate a special dinner prepared and served for them without having to lift a finger. You can gather her favorite ingredients and create a menu that features an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. You'll find a variety of delicious recipes online to help you with this.

To make it extra authentic, whip out your finest china and place a nice set of cutlery and plates on the table. You can even print out a nice menu designed on Canva.

You can decorate to your heart’s content.

6. Themed party

If your mom is still a party animal at heart, why not throw a little party with her friends, family, and neighbors? Perhaps a themed party, like the 80s, where people would dress accordingly. There would be an 80s playlist, and everyone could bring different snacks and food to share. It can be whatever theme you can think of. A creative activity I have seen pop up on social media is one where friends gather, each with a prepared PowerPoint presentation, and they discuss topics of their choice. You can do something similar. However, the theme would be your mother. Therefore, people would have to discuss why she’s a great person, mother, and friend, or even how they met her, what she was like before becoming a mother, and how she has evolved into a mother. This would also be perfect for a birthday.

7. Plan a trip

You can plan a trip of any size for your mom, whether to a nearby city, village, province, or country, based on your budget.

It doesn't have to be on Mother's Day; you can plan it in advance. Being near water can have a soothing and uplifting effect on our mood, for instance. If you're near the water, consider visiting a nearby restaurant or park to spend quality time together.

8. Animal Sanctuary

If your mom is an animal lover, a day trip to a nearby sanctuary would be perfect. Anything that allows the animals to roam in their natural habitat should be encouraged. It can also be a farm where you can interact with animals. This is perfect now that the weather is clearing up. In some cases, they also allow you to help out the sanctuary.

9. Something she has always wanted to do or have (her childhood wish)

Finally, if there's something you know your mom has always wanted to do or have, this might be a great opportunity to make it happen. Perhaps she’s wanted something since she was a child, but never got it. Perhaps she has always wanted to go skydiving, but hasn’t had the chance to do so. Anything she has been putting aside because of life's chaos would now be the perfect time to do it. If you’re uncertain about what that could be, ask others or ask your mother directly. If it's possible and reasonable, then go for it!

Hopefully, these activities will inspire you to create wonderful and personalized celebrations for your special mom. I will probably organize one of these activities for my mother this year. Have fun with your mom, and make sure to cherish the people around you and celebrate them while they are still alive and healthy. Happy Mother’s Day ❤️
