Double Chevron Left Back to News

You work hard to find the perfect mattress for your great night’s sleep. The Polysleep Foundation offers many excellent choices to pair with.

Now that you’ve found the perfect one, it’s time to build your entire room design and décor around the mattress you’ve selected. This includes finding the perfect bedside table for your nighttime routine.

Here’s what you need to know about getting it right when it comes to the height of a nightstand and so much more.

What to consider when buying a nightstand?

Your nightstand is more than a mere piece of furniture. It needs to be functional and meet your needs as well.

These are some of the things you want to consider, beyond the height of a nightstand, to help you make the best possible choice for your bedroom and your bedtime routine.

Your bedroom size.

The larger your bedroom, the larger nightstand dimensions your space can tolerate. In fact, a large table or nightstand next to your bed can help fill the visual space while providing invaluable storage space.

Materials.

The materials can make a world of difference when choosing your perfect nightstand. Not only do the materials help determine the style but they can also go a long way toward establishing the quality of your nightstand.

Storage space.

This is a huge question. Different people have different storage needs from their bedside table. Some people only need space for a mobile device, charging pad, and a bedside lamp. Others have broader storage needs that require the surface of their bedside tables as well as drawers or shelves underneath for additional storage. Keep that in mind as you explore your nightstand options and make sure the surface and storage dimensions are up to the challenge.

Bedside table dimensions.

Whether you’re prioritizing surface area or storage space when exploring your option for nightstand or table dimensions, don’t forget about the importance of the height of a nightstand for providing accessibility in the middle of the night. You need to be able to access the items you’ve stored inside and on top of your nightstand easily. The wrong height can make that more difficult.

Once you have a handle on the different considerations for buying a nightstand, it’s time to explore the different types of nightstands and bedside tables you can choose from.

Types of nightstands for your bedroom

A six-drawer nightstand

There are four main types of nightstands to consider for bedside storage. Here’s what you need to know about each one.

Bedside chest.

A bedside chest usually offers two or more drawers for storage beneath its surface. This offers greater flexibility for people who prefer to have many items close at hand during the night.

It also helps to keep clutter off the surface of your nightstand, freeing up the space for essential items.

These drawers are perfect for storing books, brushes, lotions, creams, and even a bottle of water you can access during the night, if need be. You can even install childproof locks on your chest and use it to store medications.

Bedside cabinet.

Bedside cabinets typically offer storage below with an opening door rather than drawer.

You may have multiple shelves inside or a single shelf upon which to place your items.

It helps to keep them out of sight but nearby if you need to access them.

Another difference is that bedside cabinets are often smaller and more ornate than bedside chests.

Bedside table.

The bedside table is all about surface area. It offers no storage but does provide a surface upon which you can keep the things that are essential for your nighttime needs. The beauty of bedside tables is that they can be as simple, as large, or as small as you need them to be.

Floating table.

If you’re looking to create a more minimalistic atmosphere in your bedroom, floating tables are the perfect solutions.

They keep the items that are absolutely essential nearby and can be adjusted to any height you may desire for your nightstand and access needs.

If your bedroom doesn’t have a lot of extra space, floating nightstands offer the option of going up, for storage rather than out.

Of course, different tables, chests, and cabinets come at different heights. It’s a good idea to know the height of a nightstand compared to the height of your bed before making a purchasing decision.

How tall should your nightstand be?

In average, the height of a bed is 25 inches from the floor to the top of your mattress. The perfect height of a nightstand for these dimensions must be around 24” to 28”, which is the average height of bedside tables on the market.

Ideally, you want your nightstand to be equal to or slightly higher than your mattress. This means you need to measure the height of your mattress on top of your foundation and add a little extra wiggle room to that to get the perfect height for your needs.

If you have a mattress pad or are considering investing in one, don’t forget to add that into your calculations.

What you don’t want is a nightstand that is notably shorter than your bed. It is much easier to reach slightly up for what you need in the night than it is to reach down.

When measuring, a good rule of thumb is to always measure until you get the same results three times. This will help you shop with confidence that you are getting the best height to meet your needs.

How deep should it be?

Further, consider the depth of your nightstand, too. This is something that isn’t often discussed when talking about dimensions.

However, it can be as important as the height for helping you avoid nighttime accidents in which you bump into your bedside table while climbing into and out of bed.

Measure the distances from the wall to where you usually stand up when getting out of bed. Make sure the nightstand won’t make it too close of a fit that it could become a pain in the hip, thigh, knee, or shin as you get into and out of bed.

How large should your nightstand be?

If you are an interior design enthusiastic, you must wonder how large your nightstand should be. In fact, symmetry is key for an effortless décor. So, keep in mind, the larger your bed, the larger your bedside table.

Of course, it also depends on the dimension of your room, but with a king size bed, the bigger the nightstand, the better.

5 tips to choose the perfect bedside table

The tips below will help you choose the perfect bedside table for specific situations. They go beyond height, width, and depth to create a different kind of fit for your sleep needs.

It depends on what you’re going for. If you wish to add a little pop of color to your bedroom that isn’t completely distracting, you might consider a dark blue or dark green nightstand to complement your grey bed.

Otherwise, you may wish to keep a more neutral tone in your room with an ash type of stain or go with a more classic color like black or white.

Ideally, your nightstand will be close enough to your bed to reach it easily when turning off alarms, turning on lamps, or taking nighttime doses of medication.

Wood is often an excellent contrast for a metal bed if you want a more traditional look for your bedroom.

However, a velvet-finishes nightstand can add a touch of glam to the room.

Wood is a good neutral option that matches practically everything.

If you have a wooden bed, a matching wood nightstand, or one that is painted in a complementary tone is a good match.

You don’t want your bedside table to become a clutter catcher for your bedroom. Keep the decoration simple: a lamp table, a jewelry dish and a picture frame.

Or, consider a small plant, an alarm clock, and a table lamp. Try to avoid unnecessary clutter.
